On the Faroe Islands the weather is not a backdrop but a language, and fog is its most patient sentence. It arrives from the sea in the afternoon, erases a valley, gives back a single house, takes the road away. Through one autumn I walked the coast between Gásadalur, Saksun and the cliffs of Vestmanna with a camera and very little expectation. I photographed in black and white because the fog had already removed the colour; what was left was tone, distance and the slow grammar of things appearing and disappearing. These eight pictures are not really about places. They are about the moment a place decides whether to be seen.
